COVID-19 and Time Travel

Till decades ago, families and relatives spent time together and the bond of love, trust and brotherhood was strongly intact. The older generation narrated stories and experiences of their past while the younger generation attentively listened to them. When the kids had doubts, they asked naively and got it cleared. Homely food prepared on chullah and gharelu nuskhe as remedies nourished and protected everyone. For entertainment, young and old excitedly watched the then-popular shows like Ramayan, Mahabharata, Hum Paanch and Dekh Bhai Dekh. They either learnt moral lessons from mythologies or simply laughed out loud at the funny scenes of the comedy shows. Board games such as Ludo, Snakes & Ladders, Chess were enjoyed thoroughly. In summers, children played outdoor games such as Pakda Pakdi and Chuppan Chuppai at home or on the terrace and adults spilled out beans of their neighbors or acquaintances. Every family member, irrespective of age and gender, gathered on the terrace and chatted to their heart’s content till late night. Later, they slept peacefully like babies with their near and dear ones nearby.

Time and tide waited for no one and soon we unknowingly indulged in the complexities of life. We grew oblivious, competitive, fierce and unforgiving. For the sake of money, power and – above all – ego, we held each other’s collar and belittled the other person. We prided ourselves. Grew immoral.

And then there was the pandemic COVID-19 that brought with it with the closure of businesses. Families got back together under one roof. We were instructed to be at home, to be safe. We followed it like the Bible.

History repeated itself.

The older generation narrated stories and experiences of their past while the younger generation attentively listened to them. Homely food prepared on chullah and gharelu nuskhe as remedies nourished and protected everyone. Board games such as Ludo, Snakes & Ladders, Chess were enjoyed thoroughly. Children played outdoor games such as Pakda Pakdi and Chuppan Chuppai at home or on the terrace and adults spilled out beans of their neighbors or acquaintances. They slept peacefully like babies with their near and dear ones nearby.

A time travel of sorts.

In the last few days, we have learnt that everything in life is reclaimable. Every true pleasure of life! We have realized this due to a pandemic. The question is when we do come out of this, how do we progress for this reclamation? Yes, you may have to make few lifestyle changes and it may involve a few risks but it’s worth the effort. “Happiness is a choice that requires effort all times.” – Aeschylus

  1. Great assimilation of past and present and how things had changed, probably due to impact of the changing lifestyles of the current set of generation/s.
Yes, let’s see if we find a way to assimilate two in long run.
    Well written.
